If our first post was a must-read novel for anyone enticed by sci-fi worlds, TRON is, indeed, a must-see. The first adventure film into the three-dimensional world of computer mastery, TRON dazzles with revolutionary visual effects: first combination of 3D Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) and live action, including the first CGI character, and first extensive use of fully CGI animation and backgrounds in a movie. All of it under the glowy glamour of early technologies. An original and visually stunning piece of science fiction and a landmark work in the history of computer animation.
True, the movie didn’t rock the box office back in the 80s. Yet, its popularity steadily grew, leading to a sequel 28 years later – the largest gap between any original and follow-up in movie history. Perhaps the movie addressed itself to a ‘premature’ computer generation, caching everyone else unawares. This is almost entirely a technological movie, not really so much about human nature. Watching TRON now, one can’t help but wonder about the rate at which technology is changing the world. And it is also a lot of fun!
